Workshop 5 - Black ink

Writing is a big deal! With this simple medieval recipe, make your own black ink to draw or do calligraphy with a quill pen.


Equipment
- A mortar
- A container
- An iron rod
- A cloth
- A flask
- Oak gall
- Ferrous sulphate
- Gum arabic
- Water
- Wine
Preparation
1. Crush the oak gall in the mortar. Add the ferrous sulphate and the gum arabic. Mix well.
2. Pour the mixture into a container in which you have already poured half the water. Use the iron rod to stir well.
3. Finally, add the rest of the water and the wine.
4. Cover the mixture and put it in a warm place. Over the next two or three days, stir regularly. Add a small piece of oak gall if necessary.
5. Filter the ink through the cloth before pouring it into the flask.
6. Now you can try out your ink!
