Whooping cough

In the 18th century, it was believed that the seat of this illness was in the stomach, and so it was treated by administering fondants, laxatives and a stomachic prepared with yellow gentian root infused in white wine. To calm the cough, an aqueous decoction of sloe bush blossoms was used.
